The compiled programme entitled ‘The Jewish and German “children” remember Přemysl Pitter’ is based on the extensive documentary project – The Crossroads of Fates - The Lives of the Former “P. Pitter's Children” – which captures the memories of the participants in the so-called “Operation Castles” organized by Přemysl Pitter and his associates. The documentary illustrates human fates as well as the twists and turns of 20th-century Czech and European history. The humanitarian “Operation Castles” was unique in the whole Europe, not least due to the fact that the castles and chateaux converted into convalescent homes became a refuge not only for Jewish children, but also for German ones, who had been perceived as children of enemies until then. The memories of the witnesses were filmed directly in the authentic environment of their homes, using period materials and photographs.

1000 Miles of Czechoslovakia

The original race took place annually between 1933 and 1935 under the auspices of President Tomáš Masaryk. After having been briefly revived in the 1970s, it has taken place regularly as a vintage vehicle race since 2015 (http://1000milceskoslovenskych.cz/).

A Bronze Hatchet

The film tells the story of a Bronze Age hatchet (axe) from its creation in a workshop of a prehistoric metallurgist, through the centuries, to its discovery by a contemporary archaeologist, to its display in a museum. The film is intended for lecturing programmes and didactic work with young audience.

Being Close at a Distance

Olomouc Museum of Art: The role of a cultural institution in distance education and the mediation of art collections in the online space.

The Olomouc Museum of Art is a state-sponsored institution that holds collections of pieces of art belonging to the state, churches and private persons, from antiquity to contemporary art. Our museum, like most cultural institutions across the world, had to face unexpected challenges in a time of coronavirus restrictions, and try hard to maintain continuity during the months of changes and uncertainty. While presenting and interpreting the museum’s collections, we formulated the following basic questions: how to keep in touch with the public during the isolation and closure of the museum? How to maintain contacts with individual visitors in an online space that tends to be rather anonymous? And what can we do in this unexpected situation? At the same time, these challenges gave us an opportunity to evaluate existing activities while putting our existing and upcoming projects in a new perspective. Our aim was to organically integrate new activities into the long-term concept, from the virtual opening of new exhibitions to a series of educational videos, in which the museum lecturers responded to the needs of distance education at the height of the pandemic.

A Builder’s Joinery Workshop

Similarly to the exhibition, the catalogue clearly separates the section dedicated to building joinery from that specializing in parquetry. The chapters covering building joinery define this industry in general terms and present the individual processes of the traditional craft by describing the production of a specific product – a door leaf. The text by Lukáš Hejný, head of the NTM’s Department of Architecture and Construction, is based mainly on historical builder’s guides and is supported by the professional experience of Miloš Kodýdek, a joiner who has long been involved in traditional handicraft production. The related, richly photographed catalogue of various elements of building joinery, especially windows and doors from the collections of the National Technical Museum, illustrates the craftsmanship with concrete examples. The catalogue of hand tools and historical equipment of a joinery workshop equipped with machines is documenting the change in the technological approach to this particular craft (http://muzeum-plasy.cz/node/279).

EDU on the Wire

A series of nine art lessons by lecturers of the Olomouc Museum of Art.

The short videos are intended to motivate the viewers, especially children, to engage in creative activities inspired by the exhibits, exhibitions, and premises of the Olomouc Museum of Art. With this series, we responded to the needs of distance education at the height of the pandemic.

The Rembaranka Expedition 1969

The 1969 expedition to the Australian Aborigines organized by the Moravian Museum.

The documentary about the 1969 Rembaranka Expedition was made under unique circumstances. The footage was filmed half a century ago in Arnhem Land, the Northern Territory of Australia, by Jiří Vrožina, the cameraman of the Moravian Museum’s scientific expedition. In 1970 it was used in the ‘To the Stone Age People’ series focused on the Rembaranka tribe. After Vrožina emigrated in 1981, the series was forbidden for political reasons and largely destroyed. Jiří Vrožina died in 1993, but copies of the Arnhem Land films were recently found by happy accident in Sydney. They aroused the interest of experts from the Australian Institute of Aboriginal Culture in Canberra, were digitised there, and subsequently processed into a five-part series with a total running time of 160 minutes with a contribution of the Moravian Museum. The film premiered earlier this year on NOE Television. Its authors are Milan Švihálek (TV scriptwriter, director and presenter), Richard Konkolski (world yachtsman and owner of the Seven Oceans Video agency), Ivan Červenka (TV editor, sound engineer and director) and Petr Kostrhun (expert consultant for the Moravian Museum). The film was produced in two versions: an hour-long documentary and an extended version of four 20-minute films. The last part of the four-part series has been submitted for the festival screening.

The Jawa Phenomenon – Jawa How You Have Never Seen It

The exhibition entitled ‘The Jawa Phenomenon – Jawa How You Have Never Seen It’ installed in the National Technical Museum marks 90 years of activities of our most important motorcycle manufacturer, which has significantly influenced the industry on a global scale. There are over fifty motorcycles, cars, trophies from races and pieces of motorcycle gear on display, mostly from private collections otherwise inaccessible to the public.

A film about the animator Hermína Týrlová, a native of Příbram, made by the pupils of the two Primary Art Schools. When preparing for shooting, the pupils searched for archival materials, visited museum exhibitions and places where the animator had lived, talked with her contemporaries and were especially inspired by her work. When processing the collected materials, they applied the knowledge they had acquired. The resulting film commemorated the 120th anniversary of the birth of the great artist. Pupils from all disciplines cooperated on the film; the music score is original as well.

We are presenting the second part of an animated educational series for children and schoolchildren. The film partly substitutes educational programmes that could not take place during the pandemic.

Jiří Kraus and Pelhřimov

Can a housing estate have a soul? An architect and his work – the Pelhřimov housing estate and the ‘Na Pražské’ Primary School.

Jiří Kraus, an architect, Scout guide, ‘Sokol’ gymnastics organization member and political prisoner of the Communist regime, worked between 1966 and 1969 as head of the Pelhřimov office of the Stavoprojekt architect studio. He designed the central part of the Pražská housing estate and also the ‘Na Pražské’ primary school. Although architectural work at this time was limited by both material shortages and strict building regulations, he strove to make the Pelhřimov housing estate a good place to live. In November 2019, Mr. Kraus was a guest at the Museum of the Vysočina Region, Pelhřimov. The contacts he established resulted in a series of emails in which he has written down his memories using a computer equipped with a magnifying glass and a reading device. The amateur short documentary film about his architectural designs realised in Pelhřimov is one of the outcomes of this collaboration. The background and professional support for the film was provided by Zuzana Trnková from the Museum of the Vysočina Region. The film was made by Valerie Vítů, a student of the Faculty of Arts of the Charles University in Prague, and Kryštof Kutílek, a student of the Secondary School and Business College of Pelhřimov. The film was financially supported by the ‘H Hour’ fund under the Recover Promote Cultural Heritage project of the Erasmus+ programme. It was made on the occasion of Jiří Kraus’ 91st birthday, which he celebrated in full mental vigour at the end of March 2021.

In addition to sculpture, he was close to minimalism and concretism, and over the years also began to incline towards action art as a performer commenting on current social issues.

In this film we want to show the beauty of the artefacts Juraj Meliš created for the public space of Nové Zámky. Today these works have long been neglected and overlooked, even though we walk past them every day. Rather than analysing the author’s artistic techniques and the ideas he transformed into his works, our aim is to show their hidden beauty and details, and draw attention to the places of their location. In this way, we may also be able to persuade the passers-by to stop and perceive the beauty of the pieces of art by Meliš’s or other artists the next time he or she walks by it on the city streets. That is what these works were created for and why they should be preserved today.

The Quarantiner

An online project introducing young readers and illustrators to the phenomenon of an artist’s book.

‘The Quarantiner’ is an online project created by the lecturers’ department of the Museum of Czech Literature during the time of the quarantine and distance education. With the help of a cartoon and animated character that appears on social media – the superhero named Quarantiner – It motivates children to tell their own stories through the medium of an artist’s book. Children are introduced to Quarantiner as a guide to the world of books in an introductory video created in collaboration with illustrator Milan Starý and writer Ester Stará. With the help of Quarantiner, the authors guide the children through all stages and components of storytelling, from the text to illustrations. Quarantiner as a superhero also refers to the ‘heroes of today’, thus inspiring the children to create their own story, where heroism goes beyond the boundaries of fiction in the atmosphere of the coronavirus pandemic.

‘Kroměříž Caught in the Gears of History: 1848–1948’ is a film, which is part of the permanent exhibition of the Museum of Kroměříž District. It tries to briefly capture the key moments that shaped the development of Kroměříž and its population in the period between 1848 and 1948. The chronologically arranged story introduces the viewer, in a modern and attractive form, to important events such as the Austrian Constituent Assembly (the Kremsier Parliament) that convened in Kroměříž in 1848/49, the meeting between Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I and Russian Tsar Alexander III in 1885, the tragic years of the World Wars or the period of remarkable development of civil associations in the town.

National Technical Museum’s Curators present the most interesting exhibits

In a series of videos, the curators present the most interesting exhibits created in Czechoslovakia over the last hundred years, which are part of the the NTM’s permanent collections.

A project accompanying the exhibition entitled ‘Made in Czechoslovakia – The Industry that Ruled the World’ – a flagship event at the National Technical Museum commemorating the centenary of the Czechoslovak Republic. The videos show unique artefacts that document Czechoslovakia’s technical and industrial advancement throughout its existence between 1918 and 1992. The videos were disseminated through social media.

Flying through the Middle Ages

An eight-part series of instructional videos that deal with different areas of medieval life in a lively way.

The series consists of eight instructional videos dealing with different areas of medieval life. The videos are based on the artefacts at the exhibition entitled ‘In the Middle of the Bohemian Crown – Gothic and Early Renaissance Art of Eastern Bohemia, 1250–1550’. They get the audience acquainted with art, culture and everyday life in a Bohemian town in the Middle Ages. The individual parts of the series are loosely related to each other and each of them has a specific topic. The final part is a summary and recapitulation of the previous ones. The series was created by a small team at the museum, based on a script by Martin Jakoubek, a museum educator, who also appears as a teacher in the series. It was made at the time of the Covid-19 pandemic and served mainly as an online tool for home education. Martin Jakoubek dealt with the topics in consultation with teachers of cooperating primary schools and met their needs for online teaching. During the quarantine period, the videos were placed on the website, Facebook profile and Youtube channel of the Museum of Eastern Bohemia in Hradec Králové, and they are still available there.

The 130 exhibits, mainly from the museum’s own collections, document Czechoslovakia’s technical and industrial advancement throughout its existence between 1918 and 1992.

Folklore and tradition in the life of contemporary young people. Why are today’s young people willing to devote so much time and energy to the preparation of Old Czech May Festivals? How are fertility, love and eroticism related to birches and the maypoles? What do foreigners living in Bohemia think about the maypole tradition? And do today’s young people like brass bands? The documentary seeks answers not only to these questions by mapping the course of traditional May festivals in three villages of the Central Bohemia Region.

The small village of Maršov, north of Uherský Brod, was hit by a massive landslide in 1967, unprecedented in the Czech Lands. A number of houses fell down, the walls cracked, foundations collapsed, and trees got uprooted. People were forced to move away and as time went by, the village gradually lost its inhabitants, its shop and its regular bus service. The ruins of the semi-dilapidated buildings became overgrown with bushes. Maršov is an isolated village in a deep valley between steep slopes without a mobile phone signal and it seems to be slowly disappearing from the world. In recent years, however, life has been returning to Maršov. The opinions on its past, present and future differ, depending on the point of view.

Miroslav Vrtěna, a cooper from Štěpánov nad Svratkou

A medallion of a barrel-maker who lives in Štěpánov nad Svratkou.

Miroslav Vrtěna is a member of the fourth generation of coopers in his family. He learned the cooper’s trade at the Prazdroj Brewery, Pilsen, spent several years of apprenticeship in a cooper’s shop he set up on his own and founded his own workshop in the 1990s. Miroslav Vrtěna belongs to a small handful of barrel makers nationwide who have managed to maintain and perpetuate the once common and desirable craft to the present day.

Visit the Portmoneum – Josef Váchal Museum!

A spot inviting to a monument of European importance.

This unusual museum is located at Litomyšl, in the former house of Josef Portman – a clerk, private printer and art collector who had the interior of his house painted and furnished with original furniture by Josef Váchal between 1920 and 1924. Váchal, a great artist, portrayed himself as a Pied Piper, but he does not lure rats with his flute. Under its tones, ghosts, devils and beasts depicted on the walls and furniture come to life. The Most Beautiful Czech Books of the Year 2019

The Most Beautiful Czech Books of the Year competition – Online announcement of the results for the year 2019.

A video presentation of the 55th annual competition for the Most Beautiful Czech Books of the Year 2019 was created during the May 2020 quarantine. The competition is organised annually by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the Museum of Czech Literature (Prague). Jiří Kniha, a graphic designer, finds himself in an empty office one morning. He decides to make the announcement of the results of the competition in his own way this time. The short film by Jakub Jansa features Jiří Kniha, Lubomír Zaorálek (Minister of Culture of the Czech Republic) and Zdeněk Freisleben (Director of the Museum of Czech Literature).

They Failed to Embark

An animated film created by a collective of pupils (8 to 15 years old) of the art department of the Chocerady branch of the J. Suk Primary School of Art at Benešov, in cooperation with the ‘Cesta tam a zase zpátky’ (Journey There and Back Again) civic association and the Ultrafun studio. The film depicts the fate of a Jewish family during World War II after they decided not to obey the orders and not to embark on a transport to a Nazi death camp. The film about the Kováč family is based on the narration of Mrs. Eva Benešová, one of the survivors.

Restoration of the Libušín Chalet Destroyed by Fire

The Libušín tourist chalet at Pustevny Hill was destroyed by a devastating fire in 2014. After six years of reconstruction, it reopened to the public on Thursday, 30 July 2020.

The Tábor City Walls

An educational film about the origins and development of the city fortifications from the Middle Ages to the Thirty Years’ War.

Using animations, the film attempts to illustrate the development of the city walls of Tábor from the medieval beginnings to the Thirty Years’ War. It explains the function and construction process of the individual elements of the medieval and early modern fortifications.

Autumn

A music clip by D. Fajkus and J. Hanousek filmed in the Historical Exhibition Building of the Silesian Museum at Opava.

The clip for the ‘Autumn’, a musical composition performed by Dominik Fajkus (piano, composer of the music) and Jan Hanousek (cello), was filmed in the Historical Exhibition Building of the Silesian Museum. The purpose of this small project was to make the museum building accessible in an unpretentious way and to support Opava’s young artists (both the musicians and the creator of the clip) at a time of the complete closure of cultural institutions due to anti-epidemic measures. The clip was primarily intended for promotion on social media. We can say that it fulfilled its purpose, especially in our region: within the first three weeks of its premiere, it was viewed by more than 5,700 users on the museum’s profile alone.

Portmoneum – The Story of an Extraordinary House

How a small and unassuming house in the suburbs becomes an artistic phenomenon.

The documentary film produced by the Regional Museum of Litomyšl presents the transformation of today’s Portmoneum – Josef Váchal Museum over more than a century – i.e. from the time when the little Josef Portman, a future clerk, bibliophile and admirer of Josef Váchal’s art, moved into the house, which he would have decorated with Váchal’s murals in the 1920s. This is the first film ever to focus on the personality of Josef Portman in the context of Czech culture. However, it also describes the history of the house and its other inhabitants, as well as the efforts of local artists to preserve the unique paintings and the complex process of their subsequent restoration. The documentary presents the birth of a private museum, which later became public and, has connected the lives of many people, significantly influenced the social life of a small town and became a popular tourist destination. The film was made in 2020 to on the occasion of the complete renovation of the Portmoneum. The visitors can watch as part of the new permanent exhibition.

The Přerov Uprising... 75 Years After

The contemporaries recall the Přerov Uprising of 1945.

The Czech National Uprising started in the town of Přerov on 1 May 1945. It broke out spontaneously, lasted only a few hours, and was eventually severely suppressed and punished by the Nazis. Nevertheless, it deserves the attention of historians and the general public. The documentary describes the Přerov Uprising from its beginning to its unfortunate end, not only through authentic photographs, film footage and expert commentary by a historian, but especially through the testimonies of still-living witnesses of these events.

In the Middle of the Bohemian Crown

An extensive and detailed documentary about the exhibition with a commentary by the author and the curator of the exhibition.

The documentary film was created during the Covid-19 emergency. The exhibition entitled ‘In the Middle of the Bohemian Crown – Gothic and Early Renaissance Art of Eastern Bohemia’ was only open to the public from 7 February 2020 to 13 March 2020. After that, it had to be closed and was not re-opened before mid-May 2020. The documentary is conceived as a thorough tour of four exhibition halls, in which a substantial part of the exhibits borrowed from Bohemian, Polish, German and Austrian museums is presented. The film is intended mainly for the professional public.

An Organ for Saint Zdislava

Saint Zdislava received a magnificent, dignified and precious gift on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of her birth.

The Church of St. Zdislava in Prostřední Bečva was built and consecrated at the turn of the millennium. In 2013, local parishioners began to consider building a new pipe organ, which was blessed an inaugurated in July 2020. The Velecký Family Watermill, Anno Domini 1756

The birthplace of the popular Moravian song ‘Teče voda, teče’.

In less than 30 minutes, the video documentary produced by the John Amos Comenius Museum in Uherský Brod tells the story of an exceptional but almost forgotten site in Moravian Slovakia. According to local witnesses whose testimonies are captured in the footage from August 2019 – Mr. Martin Velecký Sr. (born 1934) and his son Mr. Martin Velecký Jr. – the life of the village of Suchá Loz located in the District of Uherský Brod at the foot of the White Carpathians once revolved around this place. It was the oldest watermill in the village owned by the Velecký family: its main beam – a so-called ‘father’ – bears the inscription AD 1756. The video footage of a tour through the watermill guided by the son of the last miller, Mr. Velecký Sr. describes the traditional method of milling (grinding), milling machines and equipment, premises used for work but also meetings, origins of the watermill, traditional stories and finally also the origin of the folk song ‘Teče voda, teče’ (‘There Flows Water through the Velecký Mill’), which has inspired dozens of performers all over the world to this day. The documentary is accompanied by old photographs and footage of historic grinding equipment filmed at the National Open Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm (August 2020). The narrator reminds us that the old buildings of the mill have been preserved to this day thanks to his mother’s testament and will, despite the communist regime that closed the watermill as early as in the 1950s. The link between the history of the mill and the song ‘Teče voda, teče’, which the mother of Johana Velecká was convinced had originated right here, remains a vivid memory at the Velecký mill. The film is commented by a relative of the Velecký family, artist Libor Velan, the manager of a museum in nearby Bystřice pod Lopeníkem.

Firearms and shooting techniques over the centuries.

Throughout their long history, firearms have been among the most sophisticated and reliable technological artefacts. They were often elaborately decorated and hence, from today’s perspective, they represent valuable evidence of the artistic and craft talent of their makers. The exhibition presents both the art of master gunsmiths who specialised in the production of costly weapons for hunting and sports, as well as mass-produced military weapons used by soldiers of European armies in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Along with a diverse array of firearms and ammunition, the exhibition also presents other artefacts related to hunting, shooting clubs and the military. In addition to representative shooting trophies and enchanting painted shooting targets, the visitor will also get acquainted with other hunting and shooting equipment, now almost forgotten. Last but not least, attention is also paid to the history of collecting militaria and their museum presentation.
